Drug-Free Ways to Treat and Heal Insomnia

Insomnia is a very important problem because one-third of the population has symptoms of insomnia.
There are three different types of insomnia. These are transient, acute, or chronic insomnia.
Transient insomnia lasts only a few nights to a few weeks. This is often the result of jet lag, medication side effects, caffeine, transient stress.
Acute insomnia lasts over a period no longer than six months, no shorter than 3 weeks.
Chronic insomnia occurs nearly every night for a period of a month or longer.
You can heal insomnia naturally without resorting to sleeping pills by developing these simple habits:
Basic Sleep Hygiene:
- Exercise at night.
Insomnia is often caused by too much stress. Doing exercise at night makes blood to flow in our brain and body. This in turn makes us calm and stress free.
- Temperature reduction and optimisation.
A slight lowering of body temperature which occurs at night plays a very important role in modulating the chemical signals which induce sleep. While trying to fall asleep in bed always take steps to achieve a comfortable temperature as being too hot or too cold can inhibit sleep. If you are bothered by cold feet in the night, or wake up in the night feeling cold, wear socks to bed. The average optimum temperature for quality sleep is 19 degrees, although this may vary from person to person.
- Read books not TV watches.
Read books, magazines or anything that interests an insomniac instead of watching television. Television enhances attention, which makes a person awake. Reading on the other hand while in bed causes the eye to get tired and creates a sleepy feeling.
- Use organic cotton bedding.
Permanent press bedding can give off low-grade chemical fumes while you sleep. Your body can deplete nutrients such as zinc and magnesium trying to detoxify these types of chemicals.
- Take a Warm Bath.
It is a great way to relax your body. Do not overdo it, however. You merely want to relax your body, not exhaust it. Too long in hot water and your body is drained of vitality.
Use bath salts, or throw in Epsom salts and baking soda—one cup of each. These will relax you and help remove toxins from your body. Read more
10 Dangerous Enemies of Sleep

There are many factors, both internal and external, that can influence the quantity and quality of the sleep we obtain. You may not be able to control or eliminate all of the factors that interfere with your sleep, but you can create an environment and adopt habits that encourage a more restful night.
Here are a ten “Not-to-do” lists that may improve your quality of sleep :
- 1. Do not smoke. Nicotine is a stimulant and can make it difficult to fall asleep and
stay asleep. Many over-the-counter and prescription drugs disrupt sleep.
- 2. Avoid alcohol as a sleep help. Alcohol may initially help you fall asleep, but it also causes disturbances in sleep resulting in less restful sleep. An alcohol drink before bedtime may make it more likely that you will wake up during the night.
- 3. Eliminate caffeine. Simply put, caffeine can keep you awake. It can stay in your body longer than you might think the effects of caffeine can take as long as eight hours to wear off. So if you drink a cup of coffee in the afternoon and are still tossing at night, caffeine might be the reason. Cutting out caffeine at least four to six hours before bedtime can help you fall asleep easier.
- 4. Medications and Other Substances . Many common chemicals affect both quantity and quality of sleep. These include caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and antihistamines, as well as prescription medications including beta blockers, alpha blockers, and antidepressants. Read more

New research suggests there is a strong link between loud snoring and both heart disease and strokes.
Hungarian scientists did interviews with more than 12,000 patients.

They concluded that heavy snorers were significantly more likely to have a heart attack or stroke compared to the rest of the population.
This new data, published in the Journal Sleep, adds weight to existing theories about the link between snoring and cardiovascular disease.
We all snore at some stage in our lives. And while it is more common in people who are overweight it is estimated that about 40% of adult males and 24% of adult females are habitual snorers.
For several years now, scientists have been aware of a relationship between snoring and cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes.
But this new study from Hungary adds more weight to the idea. Read more
Health News: Global Warming ‘may cut deaths’

The risk of a fatal heatwave in the UK within ten years is high, but overall global warming may mean fewer deaths due to temperature, a report says.
A seriously hot summer between now and 2017 could claim more than 6,000 lives, the
Department of Health report warns. But it also stresses that milder winters mean deaths during this time of year - which far outstrip heat-related mortality - will continue to decline.
The report is to help health services prepare for climate change effects.
A panel of scientific experts commissioned by the Department of Health and Health Protection Agency (HPA) has looked at the way the UK has responded to rising temperatures since the 1970s, and how the risks are likely to change.
While summers in the UK became warmer in the period 1971 - 2003, there was no change in heat-related deaths, but annual cold-related mortality fell by 3% as winters became milder - so overall fewer people died as a result of extreme temperatures. Read more

- Organize for tomorrow today -Before go to sleep each night, ask yourself what
you will need for a great morning. The answers to this question are varied, but it is an important starting point. Go ahead and get your coffee maker ready to go. Lay out all your clothes, shaving materials and any other items used to get ready. Have all of your everyday type things lying where you will use them, and you start your day off right. Do the same for your kids. - Sleepyheaded child: A tired child in the morning is often a sign of too late a bedtime the night before. Check yours childs are getting enough sleep and limit their use of televisions, PCs, and music in their bedroom if they’re not.
