Sunbathing properly isn’t as simple as just going out and stays in the sun. Just as you would with any treatment, sunshine needs to be absorbed in moderation. Even the healthiest of things can be detrimental if taken in excess. The sun is extremely powerful and must be used with precautions set in place to protect your body from overexposure.
Here is a few important safety tips for a good sunbathe:
- It is best to sunbathe in the morning sunlight as opposed to the mid-afternoon sun.
This is because there is much more beneficial ultraviolet rays in the morning, and by the time afternoon hits, the sunshine has changed to be mainly infrared rays which is very hot and doesn’t do nearly as much good.
- Make sure you have a high factor sunscreen and apply it frequently, and before exposure to the sun. When you start to tan, don’t stop using the cream or apply less – keep applying the same amount. Reapply your sunscreen more often than every 2 hours when you’re in water, on a beach or near reflective objects that intensify the sun’s rays.
- Don’t sunbathe for too long at first, but build up your exposure slowly - frequent
short exposures are better than prolonged exposure. Expose your skin to the sun for fewer than 5 minutes on each side the first day. Gradually increase your time in the sun each day thereafter. The best time to go out and sunbathe would be in the hours of 10 AM- 12 PM when the sun is fully shining, but it hasn’t gotten too hot yet.
- Watch your diet and eat organic whole foods, and plenty of fruit and vegetables. Avoid all refined, processed foods and avoid ‘junk food’ of all varieties. Drink non alcoholic fluids frequently when sunbathing.
- Cover your head with a wide-brimmed hat. Reduce your risk of cataracts with protective sunglasses.

Take care. Even when it’s cloudy you can burn. Babies and children are particularly susceptible to sunburn and high factor sun protection is essential. The same is true of adults, particularly those with fair skin. The best advice is to keep out of the sun when it is at its most intense.
