Healthy Green Habits that improve Your Health

28 September 2009 No Comment

Our own health is directly affected by the health of our planet and it is high time that we took care to adapt certain good and lasting green habits.

Here are some tips on healthy green habits at home and at work:

Healthy Green Habits At Home:

- Use natural cleaning solutionsgreen1 300x225 Healthy Green Habits that improve Your Health

The house cleaning products are expensive and not eco-friendly. So, get organic and turn to basic products like, vinegar, baking soda and olive oil or else use less soap and cleansers for every application.

- Eat Seasonal, Locally-Grown Food. Eating locally and eating in season are two of the most important parts of a sustainable diet, and they really go hand in hand. Eating locally allows you to minimize the number of food miles your purchases travel, and eating in season is the best way to get the most out of a local diet. Also, your best and most available organic produce will be local and, naturally, in season.

- Buy Green. Show businesses that consumers want products made responsibly and sustainable. Next time you’re shopping, take the time to look at the labels on the products you buy. Try to avoid over-packaged items, household products with toxic or non-biodegradable chemicals, and choose items made of recycled materials or are organic, fair-trade, or LEED certified.

- Drink tap water

In certain parts, bottled water is as expensive as fuel. Just check out this statistics – 1,500,000 million tons of plastic are used to make 89 billion bottles of water a year! As a better option you can drink tap water or if needed use a filter to get a better taste.

- Unplug unused electronics

Put power strips on your tv and other power consumers to turn everything off when you go to bed or leave for the day.

- Compost

Fertilizers are expensive and undesirable too. Re-use your food scraps as a fermented material for your plant food.

Healthy Green Habits at Work:

- Change thermostat settings. Open the windows rather than turn on the A/C if the heat is not too unbearable. Adjust the thermostat to a setting of two degrees warmer and two degrees cooler (corresponding to temperature fluctuations) and no one will even notice, yet the company will save and the planet will benefit.

- Buy Some Plants. Want to create a better sense of place in the office, and counteract potentially green2 300x225 Healthy Green Habits that improve Your Healthbad lighting, hung ceilings and maybe stale air? Put some plants on your desk. Not only will the greenery give you a natural respite, it will improve the air quality a bit as well.

- Go Outside For Lunch. This one is connected to bringing your own mug to work. You need a break during the day; don’t we all? While I may not always practice this one myself, the virtues of getting out of the office, out of the work mindset, away from email, is vital during the day for maintaining energy levels, reconnecting with (gasp) fresh air and natural light, and ensuring a fresh mind.

- Turn off all electronics. Myths abound, but turning off computers and powering down the Xerox is most efficient. Save extra energy by encouraging everyone to use surge strips and unplug battery charges and personal electronic devices.
