15 Smart Ways to De-Stress Your Everyday Life
When everything is getting on top of us, it seems we have those moments when we are about ready to tear out our hair or someone else’s. That is why all you need is some ideas to de-stress and keep all of you at the top of your game.
Here are 15 ways to de-stress for your present and future life:
1. Exercise Your Body Every Day
Getting regular physical activity works wonders in coping with stress. Give your stress to the pavement or the treadmill and let it go from your body. Staying active in winter elevates your mood and reduces stress.
2. Think Positively
Learn to like, respect and accept yourself. If you are constantly critical of yourself and put yourself down, when you come up against a true adversary you will be outnumbered.
3. Take a Midday Power-nap
A short power-nap, no more than about 30-40 minutes can be incredibly refreshing. The trick is not to go too long, because if you drop too far into the deeper stages of sleep, waking can be jarring and leave you not refreshed, but actually significantly grumpier.
4. Listen to Some Calming Music
This is especially good when you are stuck in traffic. It can be classical, if you like it, or any type of “meditation” music, you know, the ones which play some cymbals, water running, gongs, bells, birds singing, etc. You know what I mean. Just pay attention not to fall sleep, especially while driving.
5. Massage
The body and the mind are connected. The mind can perceive what the body can feel and vice versa. By pampering your body, you can help your mind relax and put you in a calm mood. Getting a massage is a great way to give your body a break, and your mind as well. Shiatsu can do wonders in getting those tired muscles out of your system which will help you feel balanced and energized afterwards.
6. Have sex!
Not only is it fun and a great way to work off extra calories but if you’re focusing on personal pleasures for you and your partner, guaranteed you won’t be thinking about any stresses of the day. Well, you shouldn’t be anyway!
7. Hug an Animal
It’s a proven fact that hugging an animal will bring your blood pressure down and is very therapeutic. Plus who can resist snuggling up to a cute, furry face?
8. Movies
Sit yourself down in front of a DVD or head off to the movies. There’s nothing better than totally losing yourself in the big screen no matter what the genre.
9. Meditation of Mind and Body
Meditation is a great way to reduce the tension that builds up in your mind while under the influence of stress. Try to find a quiet place in your mind or in your office. You may sit down or lie down. Focus on each and every single area of your body and commanding them to relax with your mind. You might feel slightly heavy afterwards since you are internally focused.
10. Self-Improvement
Develop a new skill. Learn to do something new. Find out how to do something better. Your improved value and ability, and most importantly your sense of accomplishment will make you feel good. When you feel good, your stresses seem to go away.
11. Keep up Your Journal Every Day
Self-monitoring your food, fitness, and emotional feelings is an excellent way to become more aware of your triggers and behavioral patterns.
12. Be Good to Yourself
Have a list of motivational sayings that inspire and strengthen your resolve. Use affirmations daily to help you feel good about yourself and your mission to lose weight.
13. Communicate
Misunderstandings can be a cause of stress. Do not bottle up grievances, but don’t express them angrily either. Learn to make a calm, assertive statement of your feelings and needs and be prepared to listen and respond to those of others. Also, don’t keep your pleasures to yourself. If you are having a good time or feeling happy, say so. Express gratitude. If you like someone, make sure they know.
14. Start Something
Not only will the result of your labors give you pride, but it will be adding value to the earth as a whole, even if a small bit, its still more value than there was before you started. Just think, you are the one adding value to the world. You did it. It’s your accomplishment. You did it!
15. Hit the Shops Retail Therapy – Truly a Girl’s Best Friend
Experience the thrill of successful shopping; it will put you on a high for hours.
If none of the above has you feeling calmer and full destress, grab your credit card, jump online and book yourself a ticket to a tropical paradise!

Shopping? Movies? I must be truly jaded. I knew it would happen sooner or later. I mean truly. I will never be one of the rosy-cheeked little lambs who goes to the movies to relax. It’s never going to happen.
As soon as I move to a cabin (yurt?) in a forest and lay down in a meadow armed with a stick to poke a toadstools (randomly) - THEN I will be “de-stressed”.
Walk over to the neighbors’. Share over tea. Everything is better when shared with a friend. write in your journal. Send greetings to a friend or a shutin. Take the kids to the park. Go swimming. Go to the gym. Read your favorite scripture. Meditate on your Sunday School lesson. Go to the Library. Relieve a young mother. Take Her kids to the park. Bake bread. Bake a pie for a neighbor or a sick friend. Don’t go shopping if finances are not good!! rjenki
Instead of calming music you can watch calming video for better and faster relaxation. I usually find some at http://www.relaxwithnature.com
That’s a terrific list; thanks for sharing it. I’m a big fan of midday naps, your number 3 suggestion … it’s a great way to both relax and recharge.
One other idea that works well for me — I keep a small basket of Lego on my desk and when my brain isn’t firing on all cylinders I start building little people, vehicles, shapes, etc. It’s a great way of getting your creativity flowing.
